There is agreement nowadays on the profound changes that earth climate is experiencing as a consequence of greenhouse gases derived from industrial activities. Biological processes are modulated by climatic factors. Among them, bird long-distance migration is perhaps one of the phenomena that best illustrate the deep links between climate and animal ecology and behaviour.
In a scenario of increasing mean temperatures and extreme weather events at a global scale, migratory populations of birds can be seriously affected in terms of distribution ranges and migration routes. Migratory birds can also contribute to the spread of emerging diseases affecting both animals and humans, or engage in resource competition or interference with non-migratory bird populations.
However, the actual effects of global change on bird migration are far from being understood. The Conference Bird Migration and Global Change aims to analyse and debate topics such as migration and spread of diseases, behavioural changes in birds induced by climate, new tools for tracking migration, and conservation of populations and their habitats in a changing environment.
The MIGRES Foundation is proud to invite you to this Conference that will be held in the city of Algeciras, Spain, in March 2007 . The Conference site is located by the Straits of Gibraltar, a key area for migrating bird species travelling among Europe and Africa .
